Seeds are produced in partnership with The Landis Valley Heirloom Seed Project.

About- Vines grow up to 12 feet long and produce 5 inch pods, each containing 3 or 4 large lima beans. Delicious fresh in green shell stage or dried in bean dishes. For best results, start Dr. Martin Lima Beans indoors and move outside when soil is warm (late spring) 90 days to green shell stage.

When and Where to Plant- Select a sunny location and plant in early spring, as soon as the soil can be worked. For best results, loosen soil with spade or fork, fertilize with vegetable food and smooth over with a rake. Firm soil over seed and keep soil moist.

Care and Harvest- Grows best in a soil with a pH between 6 and 7, and just a light application of garden fertilizer. Water at ground level to reduce the probability of disease. For green shell stage, pick beans when the seeds have formed and the pod is firm when squeezed. For dried beans, allow the pods to dry on the stalk before picking.

Love these beans

Grow these every year. Large sprawling plants, large delicious beans. Take a while to ripen and can be difficult to germinate, but so worth it. 5-6 plants are plenty for the two us for fresh beans and a winters worth of frozen beans. We don't dry them, don't seem to have a long enough growing season (in s Carolina ) for drying on the vine (probably because we're anxious to eat the earliest ones)! Following the growing instruction pdf on this page is highly recommended to increase germination. This is the only place I've ever found these for sale.

Drr. Martin Lima Beans

Only 7 our of 10 germinated. I have never had problem with any seeds germinating. My soil will not produce bush lima beans. The plants come up, blossom and the blossoms fall off. I am trying the pole beans this year. I have worked with Mississippi State University Extension to get my PH back in line. I hope that solves the blossom problem.

Since we just recently recieved the seeds, we don't yet know how they will produce. The seeds look great & we're hoping for good results.

Germination

I planted 16 seeds indoors, but to date, 3/4/24, I have experienced germination of just 10 seeds, Another 2 seeds have shown signs of germination, and 4 seeds are showing no signs of germination.
