Martigena White Mustard (1 lb.), Cover Crop Seed
Increase soil quality and organic matter with Martigena White Mustard!
White mustard contains glucosinolate which produces isothiocyanate when the plant is chopped and incorporated into the soil. Isothiocyanate acts as a strong biofumigant, killing crop-destroying nematodes and reducing the viability of weed seeds in the soil. Mustard is also commonly used as a green manure to improve overall soil quality by increasing organic matter, nutrient holding capacity and water infiltration.
- Plant in mid-summer through late-summer.
- Broadcast the seed and cover it with 0.5" of soil.
- Sow 1 lb. per 4,000 sq. ft.
To take advantage of mustards biofumigant qualities follow these simple steps:
-
Seed crop mid to late summer. This will allow the plant to reach its full growth before flowering.
-
When the crop is in full flower mow/chop the plant material.
-
Immediately after mowing/chopping incorporate plant material into the top 6" of soil with a disk. *Note* It is important to incorporate the plant material within a few hours of mowing to receive all biofumigant benefits.
