Seeds are produced in partnership with The Landis Valley Heirloom Seed Project.

About- Vines grow up to 12 feet long and produce 5 inch pods, each containing 3 or 4 large lima beans. Delicious fresh in green shell stage or dried in bean dishes. For best results, start Dr. Martin Lima Beans indoors and move outside when soil is warm (late spring) 90 days to green shell stage.

When and Where to Plant- Select a sunny location and plant in early spring, as soon as the soil can be worked. For best results, loosen soil with spade or fork, fertilize with vegetable food and smooth over with a rake. Firm soil over seed and keep soil moist.

Care and Harvest- Grows best in a soil with a pH between 6 and 7, and just a light application of garden fertilizer. Water at ground level to reduce the probability of disease. For green shell stage, pick beans when the seeds have formed and the pod is firm when squeezed. For dried beans, allow the pods to dry on the stalk before picking.

Love these beans

Grow these every year. Large sprawling plants, large delicious beans. Take a while to ripen and can be difficult to germinate, but so worth it. 5-6 plants are plenty for the two us for fresh beans and a winters worth of frozen beans. We don't dry them, don't seem to have a long enough growing season (in s Carolina ) for drying on the vine (probably because we're anxious to eat the earliest ones)! Following the growing instruction pdf on this page is highly recommended to increase germination. This is the only place I've ever found these for sale.

Drr. Martin Lima Beans

Only 7 our of 10 germinated. I have never had problem with any seeds germinating. My soil will not produce bush lima beans. The plants come up, blossom and the blossoms fall off. I am trying the pole beans this year. I have worked with Mississippi State University Extension to get my PH back in line. I hope that solves the blossom problem.

New seeds for summer

Since we just recently recieved the seeds, we don't yet know how they will produce. The seeds look great & we're hoping for good results.

Germination

I planted 16 seeds indoors, but to date, 3/4/24, I have experienced germination of just 10 seeds, Another 2 seeds have shown signs of germination, and 4 seeds are showing no signs of germination.

Love these but availability is next to impossible

Our family has grown these for many years but getting seeds has become more and more difficult. Do try to save from year to year but your seeds are the best. Hope to get this year

Great Dr. Martins!

I am extremely satisfied with these Dr. Martin seeds. I bought 3 packs and there were actually 11 seeds in each pack, so that was a bonus. I followed Rohrer's germination instructions that were included with the order, and all but 1 bean germinated and grew into nice, healthy plants with thick stalks and full leaves. They're doing well in my garden now - they just need some warmer weather! I'll be buying more next year!

Dr Martin Lima Beans

I started these beans inside and in four weeks they were a foot high. We have a cold spell and I tried to harden them off, but I brought them back in. Every seed planted sprouted. Thank you, Great beans!

Awesome 1.5" Lima Beans

Grew 1.5" wide beans, but no 2" wide limas of legend. Very vigorous plants, they grow similar to other large limas. Very good beans, but you need to pick them before they start to get white for peak flavor. Start them inside in pots, and get them growing early to get them producing heavily during mid summer. As far as purity, I don't know. The first leaves do have the "watermelon pattern". Beans max out at 1.5 inches. Pods can contain 4, 3 , or 2 beans.

The Best!

These are huge beans and vines. Around here you cannot purchase fresh lima beans, so I grow them. I have tried most of the varieties and heard about Dr. Martin on the internet. These are just way better than Big Mama or King of the Garden or the bush varieties. They are delicious. Rohrer's was the only source to find this seed.
