Tips for Storing Your Seeds!
One of the most common questions we get is if our seed will be ok to plant next year and the answer is yes! However, proper care must be taken first before you store them away because incorrect storage practices will cause your seeds to go bad before you can plant them in the future.
1. Find a cool and dry spot for them
We always recommend a spot that naturally sits below room temperature but ideally is still inside to prevent unwanted moisture from causing the seeds to rot. For most people that means their basement or garage - either are fine!
2. Avoid the fridge
Many people naturally assume that storing seeds in the fridge is a good spot because it is cold but the inside of a refridgerator is more humid than you may realize which is not good for the seeds. Many people freeze their seeds as well which is ok but again any moisture that is trapped can ruin the seeds.
3. Mark your seeds with relevant information
There are a few things that you need to know for your future self when saving seeds. Such as: purchase date, seed type & variety, how much is in the packet and who the seeds belong to (for the multi-gardener household). By keeping the seeds in their original envelope this eliminates some confusion but many people like to use generic seed packets to keep their seeds. You can also record all of this information and more in a dedicated garden journal!
