Pink Eye Purple Hull Cowpea Seeds
Similar to Blackeye Peas (Calif. #46)
About- Popular Southern shell bean that resists drought and disease. Seeds are grayish white with black eyes. Also known as Crowder Peas, Pink Eye Cowpeas are very nutritious, low in fat, high in fiber and high in protein. Compact plants do not require staking.
When and Where to Plant- Select a sunny location and plant when all danger of frost is past and the soil has warmed. For best results, loosen soil with spade or fork, fertilize with vegetable food and smooth over with a rake. Firm soil over seed and keep soil moist.
Care and Harvest- Grows best in a soil with a pH between 6 and 7, and just a light application of fertilizer. Water at ground level to reduce the probability of disease. Support bean stalks with stout poles, trellis, string or wire. For green shell stage, pick beans when the seeds have formed and the pod is firm when squeezed. For dried beans, allow the pods to dry on the stalk before picking.
